Here we go! Here's what's currently on my shelf at home.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters - this one is one of those movies you either love
or you hate. I was introduced to ATHF quite late, it came on after Robot Chicken so I was forced to watch it unless i made
the trek to the remote to change the channel. It's rather dark humor and occasionally rather juvenile, but when they're good,
they're good.
Cellular - standard suspense movie with a good soundtrack. Download Sinnerman by Nina Simone. Jason
Statham is my favorite actor (well, western actor) so I may like this one more than you do.
Chaos - pretty much just reread the Cellular entry, just drop the good soundtrack and add that goof
Ryan Philippe.
Crank - I haven't actually watched this yet. Oops.
Curse of the Golden Flower - to those of you who will not watch a movie with subtitles, LEARN TO. And
then watch this. The ending sorta leaves you saying, "Well, okay, AND....." but on the whole it is quite enjoyable.
Dragon Tiger Gate - I was not familiar with the comic when I bought this, I didn't even know it WAS
a comic. But it is. And you can tell. I could stomach the X-Men movies, but this was just a tad silly. Pretty, but silly.
Final Fantasy Advent Children - You either already own this or you don't want it at all. Moving
on.
Fist of The Red Dragon - Again, i'm an advocate for subtitling over dubbing. this is one of the casualties
of bad bad bad dubbing. Half of these actors are fluent in English. if you must dub, let them do it.
Garfield: Fantasies - a collection of three mini-movies, the only one I can remember at the moment is
Garfield's 9 lives, which is the reason I bought it in the first place. I used to have the tape when I was little.
Hero - Amazingly beautiful. If you didn't like the wire-fu of Crouching Tiger, though, you may want
to skip this. But don't. I don't particularly like Jet Li, but I really liked this one.
Iron Monkey - Silliness, mostly, with an opening fight scene that made me want to turn it off. But I
stuck with it and it was worth the 4 bucks I paid for it. Yu Rong Guang is good though. But he always is.
The Italian Job (2003) - Pure entertainment here. Not a darn thing wrong with this. Well, there's one
thing, but frig it.
Killzone - also known as SPL. Proud winner of the Morbidest Ending Award. Seriously, no happy endings
came within 5 miles of this picture. Still, it's a really good movie if you don't mind a lot of killin'. I guess the name
of the movie would deter you, huh?
Kung Pow : Enter the Fist - if you can get past the scene with the Gopher-chuks at the start and take
a bathroom break when the cow fight starts, you have a rather infectious comedy. Oh, also ignore the ridiculous "Tongue-y."
Mainly, just pay attention to Betty.
The Last Samurai - still factory sealed, probably always will be. Got it as a joke.
Legend of the Black Scorpion - Ancient China mashed up with Hamlet! It's better known as The Banquet,
and, like Curse of the Golden Flower, has an ending that makes you want to throw things. But it's really quite good. Huzzah
for Dragon Dynasty, the best label there is!
Legend of the Eight Samurai -
still haven't watched this one.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - this is essentially Snatch with a lower budget. I loved it but
a lot of people just don't understand it, they can't follow the story. This is not a movie you can watch half-assed, like
while talking on the phone or knittin' or what have you. It needs all your attention.
Mortal Kombat - Guilty pleasure. But at least it was better than the Street Fighter movie. I would advise
you to steer clear if you are not a fan of the games, because this is a haven for bad acting and lots of ridiculousness.
Mortal Kombat Annhilation - see above, only multiply it by 2
New Police Story - purchased solely on the principle that you CAN judge a book (or DVD) by its cover.
Sadly, the blurb on the back spoils the whole movie. I was bummed that there were no special features, but that was my ONLY
complaint. The first time I watched it, after the credits rolled, I wanted to watch it again right away. Hell, I want to watch
it right now.
Night of the Living Dead (original) - the 1990 remake with Tony Todd makes this one look like garbage.
But since this one had a commentary with MST3K alum Mike Nelson, it was worth buying.
Once Upon a Time in China II - What about the first one, you ask? This one was 4 bucks in a bargain
bin while #1 was 20 bucks on the shelf. That's why. Again, I am not a Jet Li fan, and this one kinda lagged for me, even with
the presence of Donnie Yen. Perhaps I should have waited until I got the first one.
The Protector - Up-and-comer Tony Jaa is amazing at what he does, but this one just didn't pull me in.
One thing I do remember about this was a beautiful instrumental track that plays when Cam finds Por Yai.
Reefer Madness - got it for the Mike Nelson commentary. The movie by itself is quite
bad.
Resident Evil - I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking this, but this was a huge disappointment. Very little
to do with the actual series, perhaps a name dropped here and there... they focus on Alice, a character that does not exist
in the game series. The second instalment, Apocalypse, was much much better simply because of the inclusion of some familiar
faces. Although one "familiar" face was horribly miscast. I haven't watched the third one yet and really have no interest
to, I know how it ends. It's nice to see capcom has smartened up and are releasing a cg movie, degeneration, WITH CHARACTERS
FROM THE GAMES. Kinda sad that it's cg, but bad voice acting is easier to stomach than bad actual acting or bad casting decisions.
Seven Swords - bought this on a whim, and it was certainly worth every penny. It's two and a half hours
long, so if you can't sit still for that long find something else. My only complaint with this one is the unintentional laugh
it will draw from you once you hear Firewind's (the villain, played by Sun Honglei) evil laugh. I thought to myself, "this
was the best take they had? Wow." The end suggests a sequel, which I'm all for.
Shinobi:Heart Under Blade - Sorta like a Romeo and Juliet but with ninjas. Seriously. And if you're
a fan of the 'who's gonna die first" game, this movie is a good candidate. For the record, I lost horribly. My favorite character
out of the bunch was not used enough, and half of his screen time he's... not himself.
The Simpsons Movie - again, you either already own this or you have no desire to. Moving on.
Time and Tide - One of my ebay lucky finds for 4 bucks, this was a tad hard to follow (mainly because
I may have been a little.... distracted) but all in all a fun movie. I'd give you the gist of it but it would take an hour
to explain it.
Too Tired to Die - all the reviews I've read online for this pan it, saying it was a good idea but undeveloped.
It's about a guy who gets a visit from the grim reaper who tells him he has 12 hours to live. There are strange bits, i'll
admit, but I liked it. It's definitely a discussion movie, but sadly, i'm the only one i know who's seen it.
The Transporter - How they got to make a sequel I really don't know (I'm not complaining, I heart this
guy) but this movie was a mess. Yes, I bought it, but it was dirt cheap.
The Transporter 2 - And here's the sequel. Much better, and they're making a third, although I think
the idea is already wearing thin. Will I watch it? Of course. Will I buy it? Of course.
War - what is it good for? Weeeell... I was half tempted to search the credits for my name because I'm
sure they dug this out of my brain somewhere. Except, again with the Jet Li. Lay off the Jet Li, Hollywood.
The Water Margin - haven't watched it yet, but it's the story that the Suikoden series is based on.
it's gotta be good, right?
The White Dragon - I can sum up this movie in one word : STRANGE. I can't even begin to tell you about
this craziness, you have to watch it yourself.
